This is a great microphone for the price! AKG makes them solid. The P420 is a condenser mic that needs phantom power. There is a polar pattern switch for cardioid, omnidirectional or figure 8 and a 0 -20db and bass cut filter switch too. The frequency response is 20 Hz to 20 kHz. There’s a gold sputtered diaphragm on one side to prevent shorting to the back electrode. It comes with a nice carrying case and a real shock mount. This microphone gives you many options for different instruments and applications. I use it with other microphones and it works really well. I think it’s great on acoustic guitar, drum overheads, vocals or just a room mic just put it in the back of the studio. Of course there are cheaper and more expensive microphones out there, and people will achieve different sounds with the same microphone. It just depends on what it’s used for and what’s applied to the sound.

I had recently bought a Behringer C3 and compared it to this AKG as soon as I got it. There really was no comparison. The sound just got noisier as you switched to the figure 8 or omni-directional settings on the C3. The AKG was clear as a bell, and I was amazed how transparent the sound is. This AKG is not too expensive, but a big improvement over the Shure SM-57 microphones I had been using. Get two!

  3. B. Agner

I researched mic quite a bit before making this purchase. The mic is everything I hoped it would be. Clear crisp sounds and the options I may want to use. The four star rating is because the case itself has a small dent in it. Not the end of the world, but a dent none the less.
