What’s a Compressor?

Dynamics play an important role in music. They help to convey emotion, whether it’s a sultry blues solo or the unrelenting gallop of unfettered metal. But uncontrolled dynamics can take all your best intentions and turn them into so much, well…mush. That’s where compression comes in, softening loud sounds and boosting low signal levels to keep everything more uniform. So, a compressor’s main job is to make every note the same volume.

Balancing Act

Ever notice how some strings on your guitar or bass sound louder than others? This is partly due to physics. Strings with lower mass just don’t put out as much volume as the heavier ones. When used properly, a compressor makes all of the strings the same volume. Compressors are also great for slap-style bass players, making thumb slaps, string pulls and muted notes all the same volume, for an extremely percussive effect.

Easy to Use

You can dial in the right amount of compression using the dedicated ATTACK and SUSTAIN dials. The LEVEL control allows you to set the output to subtle, or engage a monster volume boost. TONE lets you add exactly the right level of highs. From clean, snappy country leads to rock solos that scream for eons, the CS400 is built to make your sound the center of attention. Its LED tells you when it’s on, and the top-quality on/off switch maintains outstanding signal integrity in bypass mode. You can power this scene-stealer with either a 9 V battery or our PSU-SB DC power supply (not included).

The COMPRESSOR/SUSTAINER CS400 is an affordable way to add some serious finesse to your playing. Check one out at your BEHRINGER dealer and let your playing take center stage.

Given the name and the green enclosure, you may have guessed that the TO800 Vintage Tube Overdrive is Behringer’s take on the legendary TS808. At only $19.99 shipped, it’s really not a bad pedal at all. It sounds very, very similar to a Tube Screamer, providing that warm overdrive sound and that signature mid-range boost.

Behringer have had to make a couple of concessions to bring down the cost; appearance being one of them. The TO800 is never going to win any beauty contests. Honestly, compared to a Maxon or an Ibanez, the Behringer looks more like a Fisher-Price toy. The interface is simple and familiar. It features 3 knobs for Drive, Level, and Tone, as well as an on/off switch. The green plastic enclosure certainly isn’t as flashy as or robust as the pedals that inspired it, but it feels solid enough that it won’t fall apart mid-set unless you really put your foot through it. The knobs are also plastic, but are well fastened and have decent rotational resistance. Bedroom warriors need not worry, but touring musicians might want to look at re-housing the TO800 in a metal enclosure for peace of mind. New Behringer pedals also come with a 3-year warranty, a sign of how much confidence Behringer has in the quality of its products.

I bought this pedal because I always heart that Tube Screamers were great for making an amp’s distortion sound even tighter and heavier sounding when used as a level booster. This pedal did not disappoint when combined with my Orange Micro-Terror amp that I have running into a Dean Markley 4×12 cabinet. The amp by itself sounds fantastic and it could “chug” a little bit by itself. it wasn’t ideal, but it sounded good with a very unique sounding but rich distortion. This pedal however took that overdrive to the next level and made the distortion vastly tighter sounding where palm muted “chugging” sounded absolutely massive and very very tight sounding. It also just made the distortion richer sounding when the gain on the pedal is set to about 10% and with the tone and level knobs on the pedal maxed out.

I needed a decent modeling solution between my pedal cluster and a dead clean amp. This modeling pedal is really good for the price, and I highly recommend the tweed setting. The other (non-tweed) models are just way too over the top for my taste, uncontrollable gain structures, end up harsh and muddy. You can play with the switches to emulate different mic placement and speaker selections, quite articulate and useful. Adjust the knobs to suit your pickups, I’m, getting sweet tone using Strat singles and Les Paul humbuckers. To tailor the gain and overdrive (when needed) I use an El Hombre and a Klon clone upstream of the Behringer. The tweed is sweet.

Good pedal, does what it should and sounds good too. For the kind of music I play I need a range of sounds from 50’s rockabilly to 60s and 70s rock, with a little country and jazz thrown in. This pedal will replicate these sounds quite well. This is the 3rd Behringer pedal I’ve bought and they are very good for the money.
Great way to add new sounds to your bag of tricks.

I know ‘real’ guitarists use more expensive tuners that are probably more accurate or whatever but this thing sounds good enough to my ears. When I think I’m out of tune, the pedal agrees. When I think I’m in tune, the pedal says I’m just a little sharp.

Build quality is a little cheap but you knew that going in. If I keep playing and get more serious, I’ll buy a better tuner but for novices this will work just fine.
